Église latine

Lorsque les Grecs-Maniotes en provenance d’Ajaccio arrivèrent à Cargèse en 1776, aucune église n’avait été bâtie pour accueillir les fidèles. Les offices furent ainsi célébrés selon le rite byzantin dans un local correspondant à deux maisons construites à l’entrée du village. En 1804, suite à la nomination d’un curé de rite latin, les cérémonies religieuses de chaque communauté furent célébrées alternativement dans ce même lieu, ce qui provoqua des frictions. Afin de remédier à cette situation, il fut décidé que chacune des deux communautés construirait sa propre église.

When the Greek-Maniotes arrived in Cargèse from Ajaccio in 1776, no church had yet been built to house the faithful. Byzantine services were instead held in a space formed from two houses built at the entrance to the village. In 1804, following the nomination of a Latin vicar, the religious ceremonies for each community were alternated within the same space, which caused friction. To remedy this situation, it was decided that each of the two communities would build their own church.

Les premières réflexions liées à la construction de l’église latine ont démarré en 1817, sous l’impulsion des fidèles. En 1822, les caractéristiques principales de l’édifice furent établies. Celui-ci sera construit par suite, grâce notamment aux fonds recueillis via une souscription. L’église sera définitivement achevée en 1850. Aussi, l’édifice a été inscrit en totalité sur l’inventaire supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques, via un arrêté préfectoral du 13 février 1989.

The first discussions around the construction of a Latin church began in 1817, upon the initiative of the faithful. In 1822, the main characteristics of the building were established. This was then built and paid for primarily by money raised through pledges. The church was finally completed in 1850. Additionally, the building has been wholly included on the further Historical Monument list, via a prefectural decree from the 13 February 1989.

Une inscription latine, « JANUA COELI » : la porte du ciel, figure au-dessus de la porte d’entrée de l’église. L’édifice est ainsi un lieu de passage qui relie le croyant à Dieu.

A Latin inscription, “JANUA COELI”, meaning “the gateway to heaven”, sits above the main entrance to the church and turns the building into a pathway between the faithful and God.

L’église, de style néoclassique, se caractérise par une façade occidentale à deux niveaux séparés par un entablement dorique, rythmée par des pilastres, et est couronnée d’un fronton cintré. Un clocher à quatre pans, surmonté d’un lanternon octogonal, s’élève sur le flanc nord.

This Neo-Classical church features a Western two-level façade, separated by a doric entablature punctuated by pilasters and topped by a curved pediment. A four-sided belltower, topped by an octagonal lantern, rises from the northern side of the church.

Ce clocher a été adjoint tardivement à l’édifice, en 1887. L’église est pourvue de trois cloches. Deux cloches battantes moyennes, dont le son est puissant, se situent à l’étage supérieur. A l’étage inférieur se trouve « a cicona », cloche surdimensionnée (600 kg) par rapport à celle des autres églises villageoises, qui produit un son grave que l’on entend à l’occasion des grandes fêtes. L’installateur des cloches a souligné la beauté du son produit dans son rapport, « un des plus jolis de Corse, peut-être le plus beau de l’arrondissement d’Ajaccio ».

This tower was a later addition to the building and came in 1887. The church boasts three bells in total. Two mid-size swinging bells with a loud, ringing sound, hang from the upper floor. Below them is the “a cicona”, an oversized bell (600kg, far larger than other village bells) which produces a low-pitched sound you can hear for the most important festivals and services. The bell mounter highlighted the beauty of his product in his report: “one of the prettiest in Corsica, possibly the most beautiful around Ajaccio”.

L’intérieur de l’église est constitué d’une nef à vaisseau unique de trois travées, couverte d’une voûte en berceau à lunettes et comprend deux chapelles latérales en hémicycle en voûte à caissons simulés, dont les couleurs ont été reprises par un peintre cargésien, Edmond Rochiccioli, entre 1970 et 1975.

Inside the church is a single-aisle nave covering three spans, topped with an open barrel vault and featuring two semi-circular side chapels with simulated barrel-vault roofs. These were repainted by a local artist, Edmond Rochiccioli, between 1970 and 1975.

L’église est ainsi pourvue de deux autels latéraux : l’un destiné à la Vierge en majesté d’or, et l’autre à Saint Antoine. Le décor présent autour des autels apporte une lumière douce au chœur, par ses peintures aux teintes claires et pastels.

This gives the church two side altars too : one dedicated to the Virgin in golden majesty, and the other to Saint Anthony. The decor around the altars reflects soft, gentle light into the choir, provided by the pale, pastel paint.

Les représentations présentes à l’intérieur de l’église sont de style baroque classique. Les peintures, trompe-l’œil, ont été réalisées par Nicolas Ivanoff entre 1928 et 1930. Ce dernier a ainsi réalisé la majeure partie de la décoration, ainsi que la voûte.

The representations inside the church are classical Baroque in style. The trompes-l’oeil, however, were painted by Nicolas Ivanoff between 1928 and 1930. He went on to paint the majority of the decorations in the church, including the vaulted ceiling.

En 1995, la décoration intérieure de l’église a été complétée par les artistes russes Anestesiya Sokolova et Valeri Tchernoritsky, à l’initiative de Monseigneur Florent Marchiano, curé des deux paroisses cargésiennes.

In 1995, the interior decorations in the church were completed by Russian artists Anestesiya Sokolova and Valeri Tchernoritsky, who were brought in by Monseigneur Florent Marchiano, the vicar of both Cargèse parishes.

Sainte Marie est la patronne de l’église latine, tout comme Saint Antoine, qui est également le patron de sa confrérie.

Saint Mary is the patron saint of the Latin church in addition to Saint Anthony, who is also the patron saint of the fellowship.

Ce dernier est célébré le 17 janvier au matin. Cette fête se traduit par une messe suivie d’un rassemblement des fidèles, qui portent Saint Antoine en procession dans le village. Des pains bénis, confectionnés au préalable à la boulangerie, sont entreposés sur l’autel dédié à Saint Antoine, puis distribués aux fidèles, postérieurement à la procession.

He is celebrated in the morning of the 17 January. These festivities include a mass followed by a gathering of the faithful, who carry Saint Anthony through the village in a procession. Blessed bread, made specially in the local bakery, is placed on Saint Anthony’s altar before being handed to the faithful after the procession.

Outre le 17 janvier, Pâques et Noël sont également des temps clés du calendrier liturgique latin.

In addition to the 17 January, Easter and Christmas are the main festivities in the Latin liturgical calendar.

La Semaine Sainte est marquée par plusieurs célébrations. La cérémonie du lavement des pieds a lieu le Jeudi Saint au soir à l’église latine. La procession du sépulcre est effectuée par suite dans les rues du village. Le Christ sur le tombeau est porté à cette occasion. Les fidèles latins effectuent une halte à l’église grecque, ce qui symbolise ainsi la volonté de partage entre les deux communautés.

Indeed, the Holy Week features a number of different celebrations. The washing of the feet takes place in the evening of Maundy Thursday in the Latin church. The procession of the sepulchre then moves through the village streets. Christ in the tomb is carried through the village at this time too. Worshippers from the Latin church will then stop at the Greek church, symbolising a sense of brotherhood between the two communities.

Le Vendredi Saint marque également un moment d’œcuménisme entre les fidèles grecs et latins. En effet, l’Epitaphios est accueilli le soir au sein de l’église latine. Les deux sépulcres sont mis côte à côte à l’autel, et des louanges résonnent alors en latin et en grec.

Good Friday is an important ecumenical time shared by worshippers at both churches. At this time, the Epitaphios is taken to the Latin church for the evening. The two sepulchres are placed side by side at the altar, and praises ring out in Latin and in Greek.

Le samedi se traduit de son côté par la messe de la bénédiction du feu, célébrée le soir. L’église latine est éteinte lors de l’entrée des fidèles en son sein. La résurrection du Christ, révélée par le retour de la lumière, a lieu durant la messe. Enfin, une messe solennelle est célébrée le dimanche à l’église.

The following day sees the mass of the blessing of the fire, held on the Saturday evening. When the faithful enter the Latin church, they enter in darkness. The resurrection of Christ is revealed by the return of the light during the mass. Lastly, a solemn mass is held on Easter Sunday at the church.

Le 15 août, l’Assomption, est également une étape importante du calendrier liturgique. Une messe est célébrée à cette occasion et est suivie d’une procession au cours de laquelle la Vierge Marie est portée dans le village.

Assumption, on the 15 August, is another major event in the liturgical calendar. A special mass is held, followed by a procession in which the Virgin Mary is carried through the village.

Le calendrier liturgique fait parfois l’objet d’adaptations, l’histoire de Cargèse étant marquée par la coexistence de deux communautés religieuses. C’est ainsi que l’Ascension est généralement célébrée au sein de l’église latine, tandis que la Pentecôte rassemble souvent les fidèles au sein de l’église grecque. De même, les rameaux sont célébrés alternativement au sein des deux églises. Il en va de même concernant la traditionnelle célébration religieuse du dimanche, le lieu de prière étant désigné en fonction de la disponibilité des officiants.

The liturgical calendar is somewhat flexible, however, to account for the co-existence of two religious communities within Cargèse. For example, while Ascension is generally celebrated in the Latin church, Pentecost brings the faithful rather to the Greek church. Similarly, Palm Sunday is celebrated alternately between the two churches. This is also true of the traditional Sunday service, whose location depends on the availability of the clergy.

Ces deux églises qui se font face constituent un paysage unique et sont symboles de fierté, spiritualité, tolérance et partage pour tous les Cargésiens.

These two churches stand face to face, sharing the same land and offering powerful symbols of pride, spirituality, tolerance, and community for all the people of Cargèse.
